Mt. Rainier National Park’s Cougar Rock Campground provides five camping loop roads in amongst tall trees to explore on cross country skis or snowshoes during the winter months. This campground is located two miles past Longmire making it an easy destination on the snowy Nisqually Road. The entrance to the campground is wide and flat making it perfect for family snow building play. The time we visited the snow was just right for snow ball rolling to build forts or make snow people. Presently, at this elevation, there is about three to four feet of snow at the campground. The picnic tables are white lumps under all the snow and the ranger check in station has new white siding up to the windows with a tall white roof hat. Many of the trees at the campground are big old growth trees, so they wear the snow on their branches majestically as they guard their spots along the snowy roads of the different camping loops. Exploring these different loops makes it possible to travel a couple of miles for good aerobic exercise. The snow is deep once off the main campground road opening opportunities to ski or snowshoe in virgin territory without any tracks.
Quiet, white and peaceful, Cougar Rock Campground is another great place to visit for winter fun in Mt. Rainier National Park.
